Overview

TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course is a bucket list course for every golfer. If you've watched THE PLAYERS Championship on TV, playing the course in person is surreal. The signature island green 17th is as terrifying and thrilling as advertised. Standing on that tee is one of golf's great moments. The course is challenging but more playable than Whistling Straits or Kiawah. At 7,256 yards with water on 14 holes, it's penal for wayward shots but manageable for mid-handicappers. The fairways are generous, greens are large (except 17), and strategy trumps length. The course rewards smart play and punishes poor decisions. Conditioning is impeccable - THE PLAYERS is held here, so the course is maintained to PGA TOUR standards year-round. Fairways are perfect, greens are fast and true, bunkers raked immaculately. Service is excellent. Carts included (walking allowed with caddie). Expect a 4.5-hour round. The stadium mounds, grandstands, and THE PLAYERS infrastructure are visible throughout - you'll walk where pros walk, putt where pros putt. The 17th tee shot is the highlight. The 18th hole walk-up is iconic. The clubhouse has THE PLAYERS memorabilia and trophy displays. Weather: North Florida is hot and humid May-September (85-95°F / 29-35°C) with afternoon thunderstorms. Winter (Jan-April) is mild and pleasant (60-75°F / 16-24°C) - peak season. Summer is cheaper but brutally hot. Always bring sunscreen, hydration, and rain gear. At $495 peak season (Jan-May) or $250-350 off-peak, it's expensive but more affordable than Whistling Straits or Kiawah. Caddies optional (recommended for yardages and experience). The course is more accessible than other top courses - public tee times available, no resort stay required.

History

TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course opened in 1980, designed by Pete Dye. It was the first 'Tournament Players Club' course - a concept created by PGA TOUR Commissioner Deane Beman to give the Tour its own venue. The Stadium Course was designed specifically to host THE PLAYERS Championship (often called the 'fifth major'). The course was revolutionary: built on swampland with spectator mounds (stadium-style viewing), water hazards throughout, and the infamous island green 17th hole. When it opened, pros hated it - too penal, too gimmicky. But over time, it became beloved. The island green 17th is now the most famous hole in golf. The course underwent a major renovation in 2006-2007 (Alice Dye and Bobby Weed), softening some of the harshest features while maintaining its character. TPC Sawgrass became the 'Home of THE PLAYERS Championship' and the PGA TOUR's Global Home (headquarters in Ponte Vedra Beach). THE PLAYERS Championship, held annually in March, is one of golf's premier events with the largest purse ($25 million+ in 2024). The course has produced legendary moments: Tiger Woods' better-than-most putt (2001), Phil Mickelson's closing stretch (2007), Rickie Fowler's final-round 67 to win (2015), and countless balls in the water on 17. The Stadium Course is consistently ranked in the top 100 courses in the world and top 20 public courses in America. It's unique as a completely manufactured course (built on swampland) that hosts a major-caliber event.

Drivable par 4 for long hitters but dangerous. Water left, bunkers right. Risk-reward strategy. Fun hole.

Our Verdict

TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course is the most famous public access golf course in America and an absolute must-play for serious golfers. The island green 17th hole is the most iconic shot in golf - standing on that tee where Tiger, Phil, Rory, and every PGA TOUR pro has stood is surreal and thrilling. The hole is as terrifying as advertised, and hitting the green is immensely satisfying. The course itself is excellent - challenging but fair, strategic, and impeccably maintained. Pete Dye's design is brilliant: water hazards, spectator mounds, risk-reward holes, and a dramatic finish. The 16-17-18 stretch is one of golf's best. The course is hard but more playable than Whistling Straits or Kiawah - mid-handicappers can have fun here. At $495 peak season or $250-350 off-peak, it's expensive but more accessible than other bucket list courses. Public tee times are available (book early), carts are included, and no resort stay is required (though packages make access easier). Off-peak summer rates ($200-300) are excellent value if you can handle the heat. Is it worth it? Absolutely. Every golfer should play TPC Sawgrass once. The island green 17 is the most famous shot in golf. THE PLAYERS Championship prestige is real. The conditioning is PGA TOUR quality. The experience - walking where pros walk, putting where they putt - is unforgettable. Best for: All golfers from mid-handicappers to low handicaps. Anyone who watches THE PLAYERS on TV. Golfers who want a bucket list course without extreme difficulty or cost. Families (kid-friendly, carts included). Not ideal for: High handicappers who hate water hazards, budget-conscious golfers in peak season. Combine Stadium Course with Dye's Valley Course (excellent, less famous, cheaper). Jacksonville and St. Augustine nearby. Beaches excellent. Florida golf trip can include other top courses (Streamsong, World Golf Village). Bottom line: TPC Sawgrass is a must-play. The island green 17 is worth the trip alone. The course is excellent, the conditioning impeccable, and the experience unforgettable. Book it, aim at the island green, and prepare for one of golf's great moments. Missing the green and hearing the splash is also part of the legend. Either way, you'll remember it forever.
